Hector Ponce

I was born in Cartagena / Colombia, september 1985. I always showed my passion for all kinds of art and my family always supported me. My grandmother kept all my drawings as a souvenir for the moment I will get famous. I left my city towards Panama when I was 23 years old and finished college. In Panama City I met my husband, I  started getting in contact with models and fotografers and my passion for photography grew much bigger.

In 2010 I emmigrated to Europe / Germany with my husband. There I developed my photography skills. It all started as a hobby and ended as a big passion.

My first publication in an international magazine was 2014, in the fall edition of „Trend Privé Magazine“.

Since then I live my love for photography as much as I can and discover step by step the place I have developed.

What makes you choose this profession?

I won‘t say that I chose this profession, the profession chose me, but to answer this question, it was the beauty of simplicity that I saw through my camera. I quickly get in touch when I get a personal connection to my model or person front of me.

Who were your biggest influences when you started? Now?

The big magazines all around the world like VOGUE, BAZAAR or COSMOPOLITAN inspired me a lot.

When I get started I didn’t know any photographer whom I admired. By the time when I was  watching Germanys next Top Model by Heidi Klum, I got influenced by all the famous photographers and now my big influences are photographers like Mario Testino, Kristian Schuller and Ellen von Unwerth.

Do you remember your first shot? What was it?

My first shoot was with my best friend Nadja, exactly the day we met the first time and we connected. It was very special for me because I recently arrived in Germany and I was trying to make some new friends. Then I got this tactic and voila now i’m a photographer maybe by accident.

How do you plan a new shoot?

I don’t plan my shootings. I’m very spontaneous with that. It‘s up the weather or my mood. Sometimes I‘m ready to do editorial without knowing that I wanna do it… It‘s complicated to explain. That’s why I tell it my style. I do love editorials in an indoor studio but I really do love outdoor shootings by daylight and chaos on the street.

Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?

I don’t have a favorite work or shoot. I am surprised by myself every time I start a new one. All are special to me because of the connection to all the people involved.

Do you have any problem on the way of your profession? How did you solve it?

As I said before, I‘m generally very spontaneous. If something is not working in a shoot then I change my ideas to a new one and try to get the best with the conditions I have.

What are your career goals?

First of all to be in as much magazines as possible all around the world, to show my work as good as I can, and to see my art in a lot of COVER MAGAZINES.

What are your upcoming projects/trips?

My work will be published in various magazines around Europe and the EEUU. I’m very happy about that and I think I‘m gonna use the time in this pandemic to shoot and create some new stories with my models.

What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer?

I know that it’s not easy to begin or to plan. But when you make the first step then all the things will come to you. You need to work really hard and don’t pay attention to people who don’t wanna give you a chance. Sometimes you have to be rejected to get stronger and make your goals more clear. Having money does not mean success.
